‘Textures by Domino’ features standout effects for high-end labels and packaging
Domino Digital Printing Solutions is proud to present at Label & Print 2016 (Stand J21, NEC Birmingham, 24th – 25th February) ‘Textures by Domino’, a new unique ink jet capability which allows label printers to print an endless scope of digitally textured labels just by using the high opacity white ink on the N610i digital colour label press, without the need to invest in expensive textured substrates. This technique enables printers to create visually striking, tactile labels that not only give products strong shelf presence but also help to increase customer engagement across a wide variety of sectors, such as wine, beer, cosmetics and beauty.
Consumers don’t just use their eyes when making purchasing decisions – they use the sense of touch too. Research has shown that a brand’s impact increases by 30% when more than one sense is engaged in packaging design. Using this technique gives labels that added ‘feel appeal’, thereby maximising the chance of the product being taken off the shelf.
Jon Pritchard, Product Manager at Domino Printing Sciences explains, “Due to the initial positive feedback that we received at Labelexpo, we are now delighted to launch ‘Textures by Domino’, showcasing a whole new set of designs, colours and textured label samples that illustrate to our customers the range of effects can be created with ink jet, with lower costs than by using textured papers.”
For example, label printers servicing the craft beer industry, a sector which has recently exploded in popularity, could use the N610i to create raised, textured designs to reflect the earthy nature of brewing and the natural grains and ingredients that go into it, or to create an eye-catching metallic effect that would allow the bottle to stand out in a bar display or on a crowded supermarket shelf. A labeller catering to the wine industry could generate a ‘premium’ feel using digital textured effects across a bottle label simulating conventional textured papers, thereby adding value to the brand. This process can also be applied to synthetic materials which is unique.
‘Textures by Domino’ is also a perfect fit for the beauty and cosmetics sector. Consumers buy these products to look great and feel gorgeous, so why shouldn’t the product labels also echo this? The N610i can be used to create natural material effects that reflect Mother Nature’s influence on the ingredients or to create a high gloss differential finish that really sparkles and stands out on the shelf.
Jon goes on to explain how the capability to create these effects is unique to Domino: “A variety of effects can be applied to existing designs and images by adding a white layer to the artwork. The N610i prints at 50m/min and has the highest white opacity on the market with the thickest layer of ink, creating a silkscreen feel. To my knowledge, no other company today has this combination of opacity and ink film thickness.”
“At Domino we’re always pushing ourselves to discover new ways in which digital print can add value and ‘Textures by Domino’ is yet another example of what the label and packaging industries can achieve with an innovative system like the N610i,” concludes Jon. “Ultimately, it is by experimenting with this technique that label printers will be able to deliver creative results to their customers, and therefore differentiate themselves from other label printers.”
