Sappi Algro Design® makes a big splash at drupa 2012
Featured in a wide range of packaging, commercial print and publication applications
At drupa 2012, a significant amount of emphasis is being placed on innovations in printing technologies across the board, ranging from digital to offset, flexo and gravure. But what is a printing press without substrates? And even the best presses aren’t shown off to their best advantage with less-than-optimum paperboard.
That’s why many exhibitors at drupa have selected Sappi’s Algro Design premium paperboards for their showcase printed applications in packaging, commercial print and publications.
“We are very excited to have such a broad presence at drupa 2012 with our superior paperboards, “comments Lars Scheidweiler, Business Manager SBB Cartonboard. “We believe visitors to drupa will be able to clearly see the difference Algro Design makes across the packaging, publishing and commercial print segments, and we are proud to have been selected by these partners as the substrate of choice for these stunning applications.”
Packaging
Many consumer buying decisions are made at the shelf, and research shows that the quality of the packaging can have a significant impact on at-the-shelf buying decisions, sometimes being the first moment of truth. For this reason, the Algro Design product range has been popular with both brand owners and converters in the folding carton arena. And consumers intuitively identify it as the ideal carrier for packaging of premium and high-end products. Its bright white surface, high level of light resistance and silky soft surface just scream “premium” and “buy me” providing a visible representation of the quality of the brand.
Converters are also happy with the high carton quality levels achieved in downstream processing. Every conceivable finishing technique, such as punching, masking, foil embossing, structured embossing, hot foil stamping, cold foil transfer, flock and special effect painting, can be realized in the optimum way for high quality packaging using Algro Design.
At drupa 2012, several exhibitors have chosen Algro Design to print sample packages, including the following:
• Finishing supplier Bobst (Hall 10, Stand A04) is using Algro Design Card at 345 g/m² to produce a box destined for the pharmaceutical industry using braille techniques and converted on the Masterfold 110, as well as a box for the cosmetics industry using the Masterfoil 106 PR, which is their latest foilstamper system.
• Leonhard Kurz Stiftung (Hall 3, Stand D70), a producer of metallic foils for value-adding special effects, will be producing a poster that is pre-die-cut to fold into a box. Using Algro Design as a base, Kurz adds metallic highlights to deepen emotional response and stimulate purchasing behaviour. Kurz provides hot-and cold-foiling solutions aimed at making metallic decoration practical for luxurious and mass-market applications including folding cartons, cigarette packs, labelling, books and magazines.
• VEGA Group (Hall 10, Stand B39), the Italian reference in the packaging market for the production of machineries for folding and gluing blanks made of solid and corrugated board and plastic materials, is celebrating its 65th birthday at drupa. For the occasion they have developed together with Sappi's merchant partner Plastic Stratosfera two folding boxes using Algro Design 300 g/m².
Publications
Two trade magazines will also be on display at the show, featuring Algro Design and further demonstrating the suitability of this high-end substrate for the publishing industry.
• Sappi has delivered Algro Design Duo 300 g/m² (coated symmetrically on both sides) to trade publication France Graphique to print covers for a special issue released on April 20th. The cover will feature spot varnish, and will be distributed during drupa at the dedicated international press stand. Sappi has also provided Magno Satin 115 g/m² for the inside pages. An extra 5.000 copies will be distributed to the regular readers of France Graphique.
• In addition Sappi is also sponsoring trade publication Creativ Verpacken for its April 24th issue. This publication has a circulation of 10.500 copies, and there will be extra distribution during drupa. The Creativ cover shows hotfoil embossing combined with metallic finishing effects, transparent holographic embossing, micro embossing and blind embossing. It is a perfect combination of photography, high quality embossing and ultra-modern stamping techniques. The technically highly complex and beautifully designed cover of Creativ Verpacken is the result of a multi-company collaboration between Hinderer + Mühlich (Hall 3, Stand D70), for artwork and embossing; hotfoil from Kurz; embossing from Gietz; design by g.a.s.and Sappi for premium paperboard. The cover was printed by Druckerei Beck OHG of Süssen.
Commercial Print
Not to be left out of the mix, commercial printers are also finding many applications for Algro Design. At drupa, visitors will see this in action with several very special applications.
• Verlag Deutscher Drucker published a series of 10 separate drupa Technology Guides covering everything from creation and production to green printing, digital printing, packaging and label production, and more. These dual language (English/German) guides are printed with Algro Design and will be made available at the main entrances of the exhibition hall during all 14 days of the show.
• Algro Design was used to print brochures for Kama (Hall 2, Stand B32). Sappi provided Algro Design 270 g/m² for the inside pages of the brochure, and Algro Design Duo 380 g/m² for the cover. This brochure uses a number of high-end finishing techniques to create a WOW effect that visitors to Drupa will want to see for themselves.
• Gietz (Hall 3, Stand B53) will be converting a poster at the show to promote its new Foil Commander machine using Algro Design 350 g/m². The poster has a format of 75 x 105 cm and uses several fancy finishing techniques. Called Evolution, it presents a timeline of the origins of Gietz machines, manufactured since 1892 in Switzerland.
• Heidelberg (Halls 1/2) will be producing a 6-page brochure on its new flagship product using Algro Design 250 g/m², displaying various finishing techniques. Heidelberg will also be using Agro Design 300 g/m² for the cover of the Audi A1 notebook, being printed in the Heidelberg stand.
