Herma UK: Race the sun challenge – 25TH June 2016
This years annual Herma Charity challenge saw 2 teams entering the ‘Race the Sun’.
It was a gruelling challenge for both teams riding 25 miles, trekking up Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales (which is where the elite SAS conduct most of their training) with an 8.5 mile loop, then back on the bikes for 5 miles to the Pontsticill reservoir for a 3 miles canoe course before the final 25 mile bike ride back to Brecon.
Our main aim says Colin Phillips was for the Legends to try and beat their time from last year and the Leg Ends team to set themselves a time to beat next year!! I’m glad to say both goals were achieved. Both teams successfully completing the course with Herma Legends recording a time of 8 hours 47 minutes and the Herma Leg Ends, 12 hours 6 minutes.
The teams were entered into the mixed team category this year, a total of 103 teams entered, 45 of which were mixed teams. The Legends team came third in their category, and the Leg Ends finished 31st out of the mixed teams, a great achievement.
We raised in excess if £5,500 for our chosen charities including Namuwongo children’s charity, Breast Cancer Care & Cancer Research (a big thank you to all who sponsored us), everyone arrived back safely, although the weather changed dramatically during the event with rain, sunshine, showers and wind.
A great effort by both teams, I’m very proud of the teams committed team work and still all smiling at the end of a very long and hard day in the Welsh mountains!!! Says Colin Phillips
