HERMA self-adhesive materials: Number-one within just five years

• Since their market launch in 2008, the innovative dispersion adhesives 62G and 62Gpt have emerged as the best-selling HERMA label adhesives of all time.
• These adhesives are now applied to one-third of HERMA's entire label stock.
• Rapid success facilitated by outstanding adhesive properties in challenging conditions and superior processing attributes.

It is a success story probably beyond compare in the self-adhesive materials industry. Within just five years, the innovative dispersion adhesive 62Gpt (together with its forerunner 62G) has captured a one-third share of HERMA's total sales volume, which itself has risen sharply in the same period. It has thus become the best-selling HERMA adhesive of all time. For managing director Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner, however, the triumph comes as no surprise, as he explains, "Our customers are using this extremely versatile dispersion adhesive to overcome an increasing number of challenges that were formerly the domain of rubber-based hotmelt PSAs, which are difficult to process. Our multi-layer technology enables us to control the adhesive attributes independently of the processing properties. Users thus have access to the best of both worlds, so to speak."

High performance for cool and moist applications
Among the strengths of the 62Gpt adhesive is its suitability for use in cool and moist conditions that call for high tack, even at minus 10 degrees Celsius, in particular if the blow-on labelling method is being employed. In such cases, very little pressure is usually applied to attach the label. Thanks to its low migration values, moreover, this adhesive can also be used instead of special food grade adhesives, which are expensive. As a dispersion adhesive, 62Gpt is nonetheless easy to process, including the die-cutting process. It resists the influences of both chemicals and heat.

Dispersion adhesives gaining in popularity
"Multi-layer technology has played a major part in the tremendous success of the 62Gpt adhesive. In the absence of a comparable dispersion adhesive on the market at the moment, its popularity looks set to continue," comments Dr. Baumgärtner. "Another contributory factor is our adoption of multi-layer technology as standard for many of our products – without any additional cost to the label manufacturer." Thanks to multi-layer technology, dispersion adhesives with supreme processing attributes can now be used for sophisticated applications that have been the reserve of hotmelts or special adhesives thus far. Topical examples illustrating the scope of HERMA's dispersion adhesives are tyre labels, seawater-resistant labels, and labels that can be peeled off, but do not contain any plasticizers.
