Herma installs slitting machine for demanding materials
Herma has invested approximately 1.5 million EUR (1.7 million USD) in a special slitting machine for demanding materials, such as clear-on-clear labelstock, and to meet increasing demand for film-based adhesive materials with multi-layer adhesives.
Installed at its headquarters in Filderstadt near Stuttgart, Germany, the machine is designed for processing demanding labelstock and large roll diameters.
The new slitting machine is expected to propel Herma’s strong growth in the film segment, and has extended its capacities in response to increasing demand for film-based adhesive materials with multi-layer adhesives. ‘Thanks to our multi-layer technology, printers can produce labels from film-based label stock much more easily,’ said Herma managing director Dr Thomas Baumgärtner. ‘Multi-layer Herma materials cause less adhesive bleeding, for instance. Likewise, the level of contamination of the slitting dies is significantly reduced.’
Further, clear-on-clear labelstock and metalized films are currently in high demand but are rather fragile, require constant winding tension for optimal winding quality as well as extremely precise, clean cutting edges. The new film slitting machine sets benchmarks in this regard, Herma said, and enables a constant winding tension even on rolls with a 1,250mm (50in) diameter. With many other slitting machines, the winding quality decreases with increasing running lengths or with increasing roll diameters.
‘The cutting edges are very precise and clean,’ said Herma employee Roman Aberle.
‘The high winding quality as well as the use of large rolls can help printers to increase production efficiency,’ concluded Baumgärtner.
