HERMA GmbH: Donation for South Africa to Care&Share&Smile

• 20,000 euros for two specific projects forming part of a sustainable initiative in Knysna in Western Cape Province
• Getting socially deprived children and young people off the street and giving them hope
• Committed fellow citizens in the townships and communities

By donating 20,000 euros, HERMA is making a major contribution to a sustainable aid programme in South Africa. The funding will enable Care&Share&Smile to extend and further enhance two particular long-term projects. Sponsored by the charitable organisation whose head office is in Esslingen, Germany, the projects fall under the headings of continuous education, mentoring and humanitarian aid. "We all recall the moving celebration of Nelson Mandela's life in December and, in this context, the widespread acknowledgment that further action is essential – grief and looking back at what has been achieved since apartheid was overcome are not enough," comments HERMA managing director Sven Schneller. "Now more than ever, it is essential to ensure continuity in improving the lives of the most vulnerable people there." Fellow managing director Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner adds, "In particular, the well-integrated, long-term projects for children and young people in the municipality of Knysna in Western Cape Province were compelling arguments in favour of the coherent Care&Share&Smile programme."

Giving hope
For Heike Ellwanger, the photojournalist, aid worker and founder of the organisation, the goal is to give hope to abandoned children, orphans and socially deprived young people by taking them off the street and providing safe shelters and education. "For this purpose," she explains, "for many years skilled and committed citizens in the townships and communities have been engaging in coordinated social work and implementing the projects according to a plan."

Magdalentje's pre-school
This nursery school was founded in a garage 25 years ago. The current premises already allow the children to receive a well-structured pre-school education that includes workshops, measures to prevent drug, hygiene and health problems, and protection against domestic abuse. The school also offers regular meals.

Kanonkop soup kitchen
Established ten years ago and catering for around 50 children and young people, this soup kitchen ranks among the most effective in the entire region. For those it looks after, it is the principal provider of a regular nutritious meal. The kitchen also offers educational sessions for the children's parents, as well as after-school tuition and workshops. A vegetable garden organised by the young people there is one of the ways in which they are being helped to help themselves.
