HERMA: Applying super strong and safe labels

In long-term labelling for product identification, the longevity of the labelling material is just one factor. Another key characteristic is the permanent final adhesion of the adhesive. At the Labelexpo 2017 trade fair in Brussels, HERMA (hall 5, booth C14) will present the HERMAsuperPerm 63S adhesive which offers label users the possibility to permanently and safely label very different surfaces such as ABS, outgassing plastics, bitumen, foamed PP, natural fibre, PU foam, aluminium, stainless steel, or lacquered folding boxes. The final adhesion of HERMAsuperPerm (63S) is so high that sealing labels equipped with the adhesive cannot be removed from lacquered packaging as well as many other polar and non-polar surfaces, such as paper, cardboard, or plastics and steel without destruction of the label or the packaging surface. Elaborate and costly special materials like self-destructive films, holograms, cellophane wraps, or even completely new folding box designs are thus no longer required.

Highly resistant and suitable for universal use
Besides being extremely ageing-resistant, HERMAsuperPerm (63S) is highly resistant against water, hot air, and various solvents. Since it is a dispersion adhesive, adhesive materials can be easily processed despite relatively thick adhesive coating. Due to its versatility and suitability for universal use, HERMAsuperPerm (63S) is an optimal solution for tasks where authenticity, safety, and inspection seals are required, such as the pharmaceutical, automotive, electronics, and food industries.

Cost-efficient tamper-evident labels
Thereby, the HERMAsuperPerm (63S) adhesive also offers users in the pharmaceutical industry many possibilities to economically equip packaging for pharmaceuticals as well as other products with tamper-evident labels. "The main reason against using conventional, economic labels for reliable tamper-proofing was the fact that they are removable. This has been invalidated through HERMAsuperPerm 63S", explains Dr. Ulli Nägele, HERMA's head of research and development. In addition to pharmaceutical products, luxury goods and automotive parts are also very popular with counterfeiters. Special sealing labels are also used for the packaging materials in those industries. "In any case, no one should be able to remove the label without making it obvious that tampering has occurred", says HERMA managing director Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner. "Of course, you can use elaborate and costly special materials such as self-destructing films or holograms for that purpose. But it was our ambition to develop a very economical solution that is easy to process for label printers, can be easily dispensed by the automotive supplier or packaging contractor, yet reliably fulfils the security requirements." HERMAsuperPerm (63S) is available with white, semi-gloss coated paper (HERMAextracoat, grade 242, or HERMAsuper 60, grade 232) or with a transparent, glossy polypropylene film with a topcoat (HERMA PP 50, grade 885). If required, other label materials such as paper with security features can be used.
